Autumn Dorset Wedding Photography

Friday saw me working with Sophie and David who had beautiful Hinton Admiral church wedding.
Never before have I experienced such a refreshing vicar as yesterday, no pompous rules, in fact he went out of his way to oblige, top marks Peter.
Sophie's day started at the chic New Forest wedding venue of The Pig Hotel, after the church ceremony guests and the couple made their way to the country wedding venue of East Close Hotel.
A small selection of wedding photographs from their Dorset Wedding are below, Sophie designed the rustic country bouquets for herself and bridesmaids.

Child Portraiture Masterclass. NEC.

This forthcoming weekend, Kevin will be teaching elements of his award winning location Portraiture.
Kevin was one of the very first photographers to work in this way, using natural light and location to capture childhood innocence.

Contemporary Bridegroom Portrait:

I had a very good friend and fellow photographer who sadly passed away prematurely. His name was Mike Mckenzie, a character if ever there was one , famed as much for his sales ability as his award winning photography.

Mike always said he wanted me to take the photographs at Jason & Stuart's wedding. I photographed Jason's a few years ago. Now it was time for Stuart, he is the youngest and I have known him since he was a 3 year old.

Stuart chose to get married at Avoncroft Museum, Worcester, nothing unusual in that, apart from the fact that this was the last venue Mike ever worked at, in fact Mike became unwell on the day.
One week later, Mike unfortunately died.

So, you can imagine how Stuart was feeling as we wandered around the venue, quiet and contemplative. I wanted to capture that feeling.

Mike always liked dramatic low light and contrast.

Milton Abbey Wedding Image:

Last week saw me at Milton Abbey for the latest of my current wedding workshops. Milton Abbey is a spectacular location for photography. It has a wealth of opportunity for photographers, many great locations both inside and outside.

Quite often the simplest location provides a beautiful backdrop, as in this image of Charlotte, where the colour of the wall is a beautiful shade of yellow. To compliment this, I selected blue flowers, being the oposite of yellow in the colour spectrum. Light was just natural window light. Lens used was a 50m prime.

Two different images from the same location.

Photographic Training, Weddings. Mentoring:

I would like to thank everyone that came along to the G F Smith " Be Inspired tour ". The tour has now finished, ending up in Leeds, Yorkshire.
Both G F Smith, Mark Lawrence and myself have been overwhelmed by the success of this series of events. The feedback has been amazing.

A big thank you to our models for the duration, Ella Rose, Ivory Flame, Anna, Paula, and Sarah.

What was interesting about the workshops was just how much the delegates appreciated the well organised and planned events. Gail Mellors, business development manager was responsible for bringing this all together. Smith's can be justifiably pleased with her professional skills.

The workshops covered both wedding and portrait, Mark providing urban portraiture with portable flash lighting, whilst I covered the business of weddings.

My practical demonstration involved all the essential ingredients required to produce timeless elegant bridal portraiture with the help of our models. In contrast to Mark's tutorial, mine was just available light.

I believe that G F Smith will not rest on their laurels, something exciting will follow up with some exciting news in the not too distant future.

So, once again G F Smith, thank you for providing the platform for us.

Bridal Portrait Training Days

The last few months have seen me travelling up and down the country on behalf of G F Smith Album manufacturers.
I am grateful to Smith's for providing this platform, thus enabling me to demonstrate my passion and flair for creating timeless moments in each and every venue I have been to.

Mentoring and training has to be given is a structured way that is clearly understandable by the mentee, something which I have passed on over the years to other passionate photographers that have demonstrated a desire to follow in my carefully selected footsteps.

Every image I create has been lit with just the available light, rarely to do I consider using flash, which to me always has an artificial feel to it. Of course there are one or two fine exponents of that genre of working, but to me, I prefer the natural organic feel and emotion created by window light, backlight, and a multitude of light patterns that are available to us every day.

My work is always borne out of a location, symmetry and design combined with structure and graphics.

This delicate yet strong graphic combination brings the two into a harmony.

Wedding Workshop

The past few weeks have seen me particularly busy. Weddings and Portraits on location. In addition to this I have been asked by G F Smith album manufacturers to hold a series of Wedding workshops throughout the UK.

We are half way through the tour which has been well received and I have met some lovely photographers during this time. My next travels take me to Glasgow, Cardiff, Leeds and then back to Edinburgh.
I thought it would be nice to share this particular image from last week. The model bride here is Yvonne, photographed in Maidstone.

Photography Training With Kevin Wilson

Contemporary wedding photograph

Beautiful contemporary creation of Laura in her Spanish Wedding Gown, I selected the background with very much flamenco influence. Available light image, with use of reflectors and subtractive lighting to retain both shadow and highlight areas.

Creation was achieved during a training workshop on Wedding Photography in Egypt. This workshop was conducted by Kevin Wilson FBIPP.

Having started to go through some of my images from PTO in Egypt. I decided to share this one first, Howard Dawber was my very patient groom for the courses I delivered.
I decided to select a location that was modern and reflecting his persona, quiet and confident..
My workshop majored on light, control of light and critical edge composition. Harsh light is always the bane of wedding photographers, Egypt having that in abundance. In spite of all the recent turmoil, we were completely safe in the confines of the hotel.

Milton Abbey wedding image 2010 February.
Very much looking forward to meeting all delegates for my workshop at Milton Abbey tomorrow, February 23rd 2011. Registration and coffee from 9.00.
My course is strongly recommended to photographers that are keen to detect an individual style, to further enhance the skills they already possess. To learn composition in conjunction with elegance in a timeless way. This will be attained throughout the day, the importance of space within a concept
The course is designed to demonstrate fine posing with a twist, beautiful light in combination with diffusers and gobos all used to enhance the bridal image.
I will be making good use of the interior architecture of the abbey, and finely controlling highlight and shadow areas of the image.

Having returned from Egypt over the weekend, I felt it would be nice to share a wedding image from one of my Available Light Masterclass training day.
Purpose of the image was to encourage delegates to come away from the traditional side of wedding photography, to develop an individuality and strength to bridal portraiture.
The week long course has been really well received by all those that attended.

Bridal Preparations Westover Hall Bournemouth:

While waiting for my Bride to have her make up done, I met Izzy, she was bored watching videos and was very inquisitive. I captured this charming image prior to her changing into her bridesmaids dress. She then went back to her jar of sweets.
